Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso has vowed to review infrastructure projects of the national government that may affect private lot owners across the city.
Domagoso made the assurance on Tuesday, October 1, during a dialogue with the Sampaloc People’s Alliance, Paco People’s Alliance, Tondo People’s Alliance, and Samahan ng mga Apektadong Pamilya sa Balic-Balic.
These private lot owners have sought the assistance of the Mayor during the campaign as their homes and other private properties may be affected by at least two major infrastructure projects.
These include the North-South Railway Project of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the NLEX-SLEX Connected Project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
During the dialogue, the Mayor said he may tap the University of the Philippines (UP) to conduct a restudy of these infrastructure projects.
“We will ask UP if they will accept to restudy. Wala tayong doubt kung anong resulta. Ako kasi, I would trust a university because a university will not expose itself, its credibility against favoring somebody,” Domagoso said.
Among the grievances aired during the dialogue were the alleged lack of transparency on the national government’s NLEX-SLEX Connector project. These groups said the highway project should not affect their private properties.
“Makiki-usap lang po sana ako na huwag nang pasukin sana yung mga private sector kasi lahat po ng mga apo ko, mga anak ko, at pati lahat ng kamag anak na nakatira doon, is andoon po lahat ng kabuhayan at saka malapit po sa lahat, mga matatakbuhang ospital o market,” Theresa Alvarez, 52, a resident from Tondo, said during the meeting.
“Ang pakiusap ko lang sana ay wag nalang po sanang magalaw ang private sector na katulad namin,” she added.
The Mayor assured the residents that the Manila City Council would act on their grievances, provided that they write a formal position paper addressed to the Office of the Vice Mayor.
During the campaign, the Mayor promised these private lot owners that he will address their grievances regarding these infrastructure projects.
“Bilang Alkalde niyo, let’s limit our expectations. Dahan-dahanin natin parang maging makatwiran tayo, ayoko ng false hope,” Domagoso said.
“Tutupdin ko yung pangako ko sa inyo. Kailangan ko lang ng authority sa council to spend that amount of money,” he added.
